The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is committed to increasing opportunities for low- and moderate-income New Yorkers by providing safe, affordable housing and facilitating access to social and community services. More than 400,000 New Yorkers reside in NYCHA’s 334 public housing developments around the five boroughs, and another 235,000 receive subsidized rental assistance in private homes through the NYCHA-administered Section 8 Leased Housing Program.
Seniors comprise almost one-fifth of NYCHA. NYCHA’s Family Services Department’s (FSD) mission is to enhance the quality of life of NYCHA residents, and to help maintain viable communities in a safe and secure environment. Our key areas of focus are Tenancy Assistance, Resident Safety and Senior Services. FSD’s Senior Resident Advisor/Service Coordinator Programs provide supportive services to elderly (ages 62 and over) and non-elderly disabled residents.
FSD helps seniors to maintain independent living by accessing public benefits, advocating with community providers to ensure needed services are in place, and helping to maintain the health and well-being of residents through home visits, regularly-scheduled informational workshops, telephone check-ups and a Floor Captain/”Buddy” system.
The Family Services Department partners with many public/private entities, programs, and agencies that assist seniors, including Adult Protective Services, NYC’s Department for the Aging and the NYC Elder Abuse Center. NYCHA’s Family Services Department (FSD) has sites throughout the five boroughs.
