“We Are Family: When Elder Abuse, Neglect, and Financial Exploitation Hit Home” is a blog featuring a case study that was published in the American Society on Aging’s Generations publication and on their AgeBlog. We are summarizing this case on our blog because it provides yet another example of the complexity of elder abuse cases and highlights the critical need for a coordinated response. In 1997 I made my first housecall as the new medical director of the home visit program in the Division of Geriatrics at Weill Cornell Medical College. I directed that program for 13 years and over the course of those years became all too familiar with the world of elder abuse. Recently, I have had the opportunity to focus more on this important topic as a member of NYCEAC's Brooklyn Multidisciplinary Team. As case after case is presented to the team at our weekly conferences it is clear to me that many of the unfortunate victims we discuss and help have lived a lifetime of traumas. As their stories unfold I see that the event that led to our involvement was only one of many over years of abuse.
