Power of Attorney
Two recent articles highlight challenges associated with designated power of attorneys. A new resource from the Indiana Continuing Legal Education Forum discusses how to limit a power of attorney to prevent abuse and a recent New York Times Article describes the shortfalls of a power of attorney. 3rd World Congress on Adult Guardianship Library: Now Available
The World Congress on Adult Guardianship recently created an online International Resource Library on Adult Guardianship.
Case Management Postions
The Vera Institute of Justice is looking for a Case Manager for The Guardianship Project, which provides model guardianship services to older adults and people with disabilities who have been adjudicated as incapacitated by a court and lack family or friends able or willing to care for them.
A new ElderSAFE Center will open in Rockville, MD on September 18th! The center will provide safe, temporary shelter for elder abuse victims, and joins a growing network of elder abuse shelters throughout the country. As part of the opening the organization is looking for a Case Manager.
Senior Center Assistant Director
The Institute for the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Elderly, Inc. is looking for a Senior Center Assistant Director, who will assist older victims of crime and perform other duties as well.
NYS Adult Abuse Training Institute
The annual NYS Adult Abuse Training Institute is being presented by the Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging on September 16-18, 2014. The theme of this year’s institute is Recognizing and Responding to Financial Exploitation.
Gerontological Society on Aging (GSA) Annual Meeting
GSA’s annual scientific meeting will be held November 5-9 in Washington D.C. GSA’s interest group on Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation of Elderly People will attend the meeting.

ELDER JUSTICE IN THE NATIONAL NEWS
Elder Investment Fraud and Financial Exploitation Prevention Program
A new partnership has been formed between the Investor Protection Trust, the Investor Protection Institute and the American Bar Association to create the Elder Investment Fraud and Financial Exploitation Prevention Program. Through this program, education will be provided to lawyers around how to detect, prevent and redress elder abuse.
Case Studies of Financial Exploitation
A recent article published by Wealthmanagement.com provides three case studies of elder financial exploitation and discusses the challenges to preventing financial exploitation.
New Web-Based Applications to Prevent Financial Exploitation
Forbes spotlights web-based services that allow older adults to securely share on-line information with their children and help older adults avoid financial exploitation and remain independent for as long as possible.

A Florida banker successfully prevented the financial exploitation of a customer.
Abuse of Older Women
The Inter Press Service News Agency discussed abuse of older women in their recent article Abuse of Older Women Overlooked and Underreported. NYCEAC Steering Committee member, Pat Brownell, was quoted in the article, which explores the challenge of understanding the prevalence of violence against older women in developing countries.
Verbal Mistreatment Causes Real Damage
Fulmer, Rodgers & Pelger recently published a new article in the Journal of Elder Abuse and Neglect entitled Verbal Mistreatment of the elderly about the consequences of verbal mistreatment, which are linked to poor outcomes including, social functioning, mental health (after controlling for depression), and role limitations.
