Organization Description

The Carter Burden Center for the Aging, Inc. is a nonprofit agency that was established in 1971 by the late Carter Burden when he was a New York City Councilman. The mission is to promote the well-being of seniors 60 and older through a continuum of services, advocacy and volunteer programs oriented to individual, family and community needs. The Carter Burden Center is dedicated to supporting the efforts of older people to live safely and with dignity.

CEMAPP, Community Elder Mistreatment & Abuse Prevention Program, assists individuals over the age of 60 and their families. Our catchment area, Manhattan north of 59th Street, includes the Upper East and Westside, East, Central and West Harlem and northern Manhattan. In the last 10 years our elder abuse prevention and awareness programs have been presented 200+ occasions. Annually 800 seniors and professionals are trained for a total of more than 8000. Our crisis intervention services include home visits, safety planning, court advocacy, legal guidance, coordination with the police, and counseling. In the last several years the number of individuals asking for assistance has grown 20 to 135+ annually. For each of those individuals, 2-5 family members & neighbors are also impacted. In addition, other community professionals (police & hospitals) are also assisted.

CEMAPP has consistently provided leadership in the elder abuse professional community, playing an active role in the NYC Elder Abuse Conference, NYS Adult Abuse Training Institute and the NYS Children and Family Trust Fund.
