Organization Description

Founded in 1990, the New York Legal Assistance Group provides high quality, free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers who cannot afford attorneys. Our comprehensive range of services includes direct representation, case consultation, advocacy, community education, training, financial counseling, and impact litigation. New York’s low-income elderly population is on the rise, both due to aging baby boomers and increasing human longevity, which unfortunately does not guarantee less frailty with age. These seniors strive to continue enjoying the comfort and support of their loved ones, familiar environments, and control over their routines and finances. However, their independence is threatened when they lack access to proper health care and home care, face unstable housing situations, and/or have dwindling financial resources that may force them into debt. Many have never planned ahead for a time when they may not be able to make financial or health decisions for themselves and are therefore at risk of not having their wishes carried out.

NYLAG’s Elder Law Project addresses these needs through comprehensive civil legal services, community education, professional training and impact litigation. Primary services include: government benefits (Medicare, Medicare, Medicaid, home care, and food stamps); advance directives (powers of attorney and health care proxies); consumer law; housing; elder abuse/neglect
