BREAKING NEWS IN ELDER JUSTICE!

DOJ Releases New Elder Justice Website

The Department of Justice launched the new Elder Justice Website, which provides a wide array of resources to elder abuse victims and their family members, practitioners who serve them, law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and researchers.

University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine Receives Grant to Operate the National Center on Elder Abuse

“The Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California in collaboration with the Administration on Community Living is excited to launch the next iteration of the National Center on Elder Abuse.” states Dr. Laura Mosqueda who will serve as director of the center as well as the chair of Family Medicine and Geriatrics. Mosqueda says that “in addition to serving as a clearinghouse of resources and information, we will build on the recently-released Elder Justice Roadmap to lead a national dialogue concerning the abuse and neglect of our nation’s elders. This discussion will focus on how to provide a comprehensive and coordinated national response. It will prod ourselves and others into taking the next steps necessary to improve care, training, research, and policy.”

Connect NYC Intimate Partner Violence Trainings

CONNECT NYC has multiple intimate partner violence related training programs available including those focused on empowering victims and overcoming trauma. Register now for winter courses.

Videos: Financial Exploitation

Three new videos were released this month tackling the subject of financial exploitation. AARP recently released the True Story: How Alice Conned Helen featuring testimony from a victim and perpetrator of financial exploitation. The National Credit Union Association released two new videos to train bank personnel to report and prevent elder financial abuse.

Financial Exploitation Resources en Español

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau released two new resources for Spanish speaking older adults. Money Smart para Adultos Mayores (Money Smart for Older Adults) and Cómo Administrar el Dinero de Otras Personas (Managing Someone Else’s Money) provide information for older adults to avoid financial exploitation and for caregivers who are managing a loved one’s finances.

Tips for Law Enforcement

The American Military University published a guide for law enforcement officers who are responding to or suspect an elder abuse case. The guide includes tips about what to look for and how to interview an older adult in an abuse situation.

Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Coordinator Needed

The NYCEAC is looking for a new MDT Coordinator. The position requires a LCSW, or LMSW, with clinical experience for LCSW, or equivalent degree; knowledge of elder abuse and aging; familiarity with NYC’s elder abuse, aging and adult protective service systems. Erie County Holds Elder Abuse Forum

Erie County Legislator, Kevin Hardwick will hold a forum on elder abuse and outreach efforts on October 10th from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Town of Tonawanda Senior Center at 291 Ensminger Road.

The Collaborative Age: Integration Across Disciplines

The annual conference for the State Society on Aging of New York will be held Wednesday, October 22 – Friday, October 24, 2014 at Fordham University Lincoln Center Campus Lowenstein Building located at 113 West 60th Street New York, NY 10023. The conference will discuss elder abuse during several panels. Click here to register.

NYC Students of Aging Conference

The first NYC Students of Aging Conference: Redesigning Our World for Longer Lives is being held at the Mailman School of Public Health on October 25th from 8:30-5:00. The conference will discuss the challenges and opportunities posed by aging (including elder abuse) from the molecular to societal level as we strive to answer the question: how would we redesign our world to work better for longer lives? Isolation Puts Elders at Risk for Abuse

The Senior Helpline in Ireland has seen an increase in calls this year, most from lonely and isolated older adults. Áine Brady, CEO of Third Age the group who runs the helpline comments that “ Whatever the reason, it is important that they have an outlet to talk to other people when they need it. Many older people find themselves alone and isolated.” This isolation and loneliness can often result in financial exploitation as new “friends” present themselves later in life. An example of isolation leading to one such “friendship” is examined in the Kansas City Star.

Assisted Living Concerns Elder Advocates

Finding the right care setting for an older adult can be incredibly challenging, not to mention costly, so many families and older adults are choosing to remain in less costly and restrictive assisted living facilities rather than moving to a skilled nursing facility that may be able to provide more appropriate care for their needs. However this shift in living environment concerns elder advocates, and is explored in an article from the Boston Globe.

Alaska Creates New Task Force

The Alaska State Supreme Court has established an Elder Task Force that will examine how the state courts handle elder abuse, neglect and exploitation cases with a particular focus on the use of guardianship and conservatorship. “As our society ages, the court must be prepared to respond to the functional limitations and changes in capacity associated with longevity,” Commented Alaska Supreme Court Chief Justice Dana Fabe, who appointed the 11 members to the task force.

University of North Dakota Receives Support for their National Indigenous Elder Justice Initiative

U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp announced that $200,000 in a continuation of federal funds has been awarded to the University of North Dakota to to support its National Indigenous Elder Justice Initiative.

California Elder Law Attorney Charged with Financial Exploitation

A Sacramento Elder Law Attorney is being charged with financial exploitation and defrauding of frail older adults both criminal cases were filed by the California attorney general’s Bureau of Medi-Cal Fraud and elder abuse.

Partners in the News

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Center for the Prevention of Elder Abuse at the Hebrew Home at Riverdale is partnering with 32BJ SEIU union to develop an online training for doormen and women to help them recognize the signs of abuse and provide resources to help building residents.
