“We wanted to emphasize that elder abuse happens every day, everywhere in the City, and that it ‘hits close to home,’ as the ads say,” explains Resnick. “We wanted people to understand that you don’t have to be in a nursing home, or be poor or have dementia to be an elder abuse victim. Because elder abuse is so often perpetrated by family members, anyone is vulnerable. Eligibility
Brooklyn MDT
Any professional working with a Brooklyn elder abuse victim is eligible to present to the Brooklyn MDT to receive recommendations on assessment and interventions from the team’s members.
The following is the eligibility criteria for a case to be brought to the NYCEAC’s Brooklyn MDT for review:
- The elder abuse victim must be 60 and over AND reside in Brooklyn, or the case needs to have someone age 60 and over living in a dwelling located in Brooklyn.
- If the victim is under 60 OR there is nobody in the house 60 and over AND/OR the dwelling is not located in Brooklyn, the case will be considered for consultation at the discretion of the NYCEAC’s Multidisciplinary Team Coordinator (MDTC).
In addition, NYC Elder Abuse Center’s staff conducts orientations on the Brooklyn MDT—its goals, structure and intake process—so that professionals will understand how to access its services and how best to present cases to the team.
EACCRT
Membership on EACCRT is required to present a Manhattan-based case to that team. Cases discussed involve older adults residing in Manhattan.
Manhattan EMDT
The Manhattan Enhanced Multidisciplinary Team (EMDT) focuses on cases of financial elder exploitation. Any professional working with an financial elder abuse victim in Manhattan is eligible to present to the MDT to receive recommendations on assessment and interventions from the team’s members.
The following is the eligibility criteria for a case to be brought to the NYCEAC’s Manhattan EMDT for review:
- The elder abuse victim must be 60 and over AND reside in Manhattan, or the case needs to have someone age 60 and over living in a dwelling located in Manhattan.
- Financial exploitation must be a factor in the case, although other types of abuse may be co-occurring as well.
- If the victim is under 60 OR there is nobody in the house 60 and over OR financial exploitation is not a factor AND/OR the dwelling is not located in Manhattan, the case will be considered for consultation at the discretion of the NYCEAC’s Multidisciplinary Team Coordinator (MDTC).
In addition, NYC Elder Abuse Center’s staff conducts orientations on the Manhattan EMDT—its goals, structure and intake process—so that professionals will understand how to access its services and how best to present cases to the team.
